What is FTP?
FTP is Short for File Transfer Protocol [FTP], the protocol for exchanging files over the Internet. FTP works in the same way as HTTP for transferring Web pages from a server to a user’s browser and SMTP for transferring electronic mail across the Internet in that, like these technologies, FTP uses the Internet’s TCP/IP protocols to enable data transfer.
FTP is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server).
This Software or Tool is used by WebSite Designers for uploading their locally designed website pages to their Hosting providers Server. With FTP tool you can upload large and small files like .html, .asp. .php and image files like .jpg and .gif or other formats like .zip or exe. FTP is also used for backing up large files to the server like .zip etc.
For web designers a note of caution is that while uploading files on the remote web hosting providers servers, they should locally check the files for Viruses or injections. As the hosting providers servers do not check or scan the files that you are uploading, there is quite a chance that if your local machine or PC is infected with a Virus you may end up uploading the infected files to the server through the FTP.
