The New Indian Rupee Symbol and Font sign is the Indian currency sign for the Indian rupee, the official currency of India. Designed by Udaya Kumar, it was presented to the public by the Government of India on 15 July 2010, following its selection through an “open” competition among Indian residents. Before its adoption, the most commonly used symbols for the rupee were Rs, Re or, if the text was in an Indian language, an appropriate abbreviation in that language.

The design is based on the Devanagari letter “र” (ra) with a double horizontal line at the top. It also resembles the Latin capital letter “R”, especially R rotunda.

The Unicode character for the Indian rupee sign is U+20B9 ₹ Indian Rupee Sign. Other countries that use a rupee, such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal, still use the generic U+20A8

History

On 5 March 2009, the Indian government announced a contest to create a sign for the Indian rupee. During the 2010 Union Budget, then Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that the proposed sign should reflect and capture the Indian ethos and culture. From around 3,331 responses received, five symbols were shortlisted.These were the entries from Nondita Correa-Mehrotra, Hitesh Padmashali, Shibin KK, Shahrukh J. Irani, and D. Udaya Kumar and one of them was due to be selected at the Union Council of Ministers of India meeting held on 24 June 2010. However, the decision was deferred at the request of the Finance Minister, and the final decision was made when that met again on 15 July 2010, when they chose the symbol created by Udaya Kumar, Associate Professor IIT Guwahati. …

NEW FONT Rupee_Foradian

Mangalore based Foradian Technologies Pvt Ltd has created a new font Rupee_Foradian. This way one can download the all new rupee symbol on to the computer for free, according to a report on OneIndia News website. The Rupee font can be downloaded from Foradian blog.

Initially over 3,000 designs were shortlisted for the competition, which came down to five that were in the running for being chosen. He wins a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakhs from the Finance Ministry for his achievement.

The new sign for the Indian rupee was approved by the Union Cabinet, and the government will be incorporating it into the country’s workings over the next two years. The goal is to adopt it nationally within the next six months and on an international scale in 18-24 months.

The Rupee symbol will not appear in the printed currency or the coins used in India, but will be part of the Unicode Standard and in the major scripts used internationally so that it can be displayed and printed with ease. India’s rapid growth and presence in the world economic market had made it increasingly important for the currency of the country to have a symbol. Especially since other countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan also shared the word ‘rupee’ to denote their currency.

The new symbol was chosen because of its design capability to be part of existing software systems. The symbol will now be used on keyboards manufactured in India. Right now, as far as we know, there is no simple way to use the new Rupee sign while creating a document.

Uday Kumar says that he designed the symbol based on the Indian tri color, with the lines added on the top and bottom representing the Indian flag. The symbol is primarily based on the ‘ra’ of the Devanagari script, with an attempt to incorporate the Roman script also, for international appeal. Udaya Kumar will be joining the dept. of Design at IIT Guwahati as Assistant Professor.
