Meherazad 26th February 1965 Dear Amiya, Your letter of 19th February was received here and was read out to Beloved Baba. Baba was happy to receive Seth Govindas' message to Him. Baba wants him to remember Baba wholeheartedly, and always to keep Baba with him. If Sethjee comes to Poona on 1st May, it would be nice for him to do so. He can be here from 1st May to 15th May or whatever time he wants to be here and have Baba's darshan every day. If it is not possible for Sethjee to come on 1st May, then he can come during those 15 days any time which is convenient to him, but he should, if possible come on 1st May itself. Sethjee should keep his desire alive, and he should try to take dips in the ocean of love to fulfill his desire. If he comes to Poona, he will have this opportunity to have the dip in the ocean of love and then he will receive great peacefulness 1 in Baba's presence. Baba's grace is Baba's grace. It is limitless, it is infinite and there is no law governing Baba's grace at all. It is self-governed. It comes like rains, and comes in waves, and comes to anyone at any time. Baba's grace can fall on anyone; the most unworthy can also be equally entitled to Baba's grace. Sethjee had asked Baba if he could get conviction in God in the next birth. Baba says he should not relegate this aspiration to another birth. He should try to get this conviction in this very birth. Baba will help him in this, and if he comes to Poona 2 he will experience it. Baba is very much pleased with Sethjee, and He sends him and his family His love. Baba gives permission to Gurudas Chatterjee to go for intercaste3 marriage. Please tell Malinmaidasjee4 that he can make efforts for his daughter Kumar Pratihar Prativas's marriage and not feel disappointed at all. Please give Matajee Baba's love and write to her that she should remain happy in Baba's love. Baba is pleased with you, and He sends His love to you, and to Gauri and His love-filled kiss to Mehernandini. Jai Baba Yours affectionately, Bhau 1. The saga of Seth Govindas has a background that is given in the hyperlink. Amiya now picks up the thread in the context of the current letter: "Seth Govindas had lost his son, who was a very popular Government minister, doing a lot of work for the state of Madhya Pradesh. This son had a Narmada Valley River Project which is even today in progress. But the son died a premature death because of a heart attack. Seth Govindas was disconsolate and he did not find anything to comfort him, bursting out into tears too often. We brought him to Baba and he prayed to Baba to show him just once his child. Baba said (Baba talked to him in Hindi, of course), 'What will it mean if I give you a glimpse of your child? He is with me. But, even if you get a glimpse of him, it will also be an illusion.' "Seth Govindas said, 'At least give me some peace.' "'Peace,' Baba said, 'You will get total peace when you come to Poona. I will grant it to you there.'" 2. Seth Govindas postponed going to Poona, because the doctors told Seth Govindas not to move, that he was suffering from uremia and hypertension, and he shouldn't go, and indeed he never went to Poona. Baba had told him He would give him complete peace. Even if he had to drop his body in Baba's presence it would have been to his benefit. He did have to die, but he did so without this opportunity of seeing Baba. Baba's insisted on his coming, but (Amiya remarks) "see Baba's leela in all of this." 3. Gurudas was a Brahmin. The proposed person might either not have been a Brahmin or not a Bengali. So Baba gave that permission. Gurudas wanted to know if Baba permitted him, and Baba did give the permission. Amiya extends this topic to note that "The caste system was for types of jobs in the earlier days. If you were for the scriptures, or for helping people realize God you were called Brahmins, not by birth but by activity. Heredity came in, and that was wrong. According to the old Hindu culture, anyone could become anything according to his choice of activity and his abilities in that direction. Like every custom, this custom also got aberrated, and it became birth oriented, and this was the source of all the trouble. In addition, one caste looking down on another caste was never there in the ancient times. This too came later on." 4. Amiya, "Soon after I received this letter I conveyed this message to Malinmaidas, and his daughter was really well married, and the marriage took place." |
